Safety & Health

Health & Safety Considerations

At the Bark Barn, your dog's safety and well-being are out highest priorities. We take thoughtful steps to create a clean, structured, and carefully supervised environment.  However, as with any shared care setting, there are inherent risks associated with group boarding and enrichment.

Close proximity among dogs can increase the potential for minor injuries or the transmission of contagious illness, similar to what may occur in human childcare or school environments.  While we monitor all dogs closely and step in when needed, normal dog interactions may occasionally result in minor scratches or abrasions that are not always immediately visible.

In addition to environmental risks, dogs can experience sudden and unpredictable medical events that are not caused by boarding and can occur in any setting - including at home.  Sudden illness or death may occur without warning.  Certain breeds and individual dogs may be predisposed to conditions such as gastric dilation - volvulus (commonly known as bloat), where the stomach can rapidly fill with gas and twist.  Other acute events, including cardiac episodes, seizures, or other catastrophic conditions, can develop unexpectedly and progress quickly.

Despite careful supervision and prompt response, not all medical emergencies are preventable or survivable.  In rare and unforeseen circumstances, serious injury or death may occur.

To help minimize risk, all dogs staying with us must be current on required vaccinations, be in good health, and have a temperament suited for boarding environment. Our facility follows routine cleaning and disinfection protocols designed to reduce exposure to common canine illnesses.

Respiratory illnesses, including canine cough, can spread quickly in kennel environments.  We ask that owners notify us prior to arrival if their dog has shown any signs of coughing or illness.  Likewise, if symptoms develop after returning home, please inform us so we can take appropriate precautions.

While we work diligently to provide a safe and healthy environment, no share canine care facility can guarantee that illness, injury or sudden medical events will not occur.  By choosing boarding or daycare services, owners acknowledge and accept the inherent risks associated with group dog care.
